The Staff Accountant II will be primarily responsible for assigned GAAP disclosures for the Company’s quarterly and annual reports on Form 10-Q and Form 10-K, respectively, as well as other internal and external financial reports. This position maintains an understanding of GAAP currently applicable to assigned area(s) and appropriately applies GAAP knowledge to assigned tasks. The Financial Reporting Staff Accountant II will understand and perform internal controls in compliance with established policies and procedures.

The Financial Reporting Staff Accountant II will understand and perform internal controls in compliance with established policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

50%        Responsible for all assigned GAAP disclosures, which includes:

  • Maintaining an understanding of GAAP currently applicable to assigned area(s) and appropriately applies GAAP knowledge to assigned tasks. Is able to make subjective judgements independently for routine tasks as well as new tasks or assigned projects; involves manager or above in complex or sensitive judgments.
  • Being able to understand new accounting guidance and, with assistance, grasps implications thereof.
  • Having an understanding of materiality, clarity and appropriateness of wording within the disclosure as well as the grammatical correctness, clerical accuracy, and format of the disclosure.
  • Being able to draft initial revisions to MD&A based on supporting documents/ meetings/ review of literature.
  • Being able to design/draft revised footnote disclosures based on new business activities or new disclosure requirements; degree of guidance needed from supervisor or above will vary based on complexity of the disclosure.
  • Having an understanding of and analyzes data to prepare the disclosure in appropriate context.
  • Having an understanding of ProAssurance operations and financial relationships and grasps meaning of common insurance industry metrics. An understanding of all business metrics disclosed in assigned work areas as well as the objectives of assigned areas.

15%        Preparation of a variety of internal and external financial reports, memoranda and presentations for Investor Relations, Executive Management and Board of Directors.

15%        Works with other departments on the preparation of a variety of financial reports and statutory filings, as directed.

5%           Understanding of general ledger software. Can effectively use software applications for assigned work or special projects.  Demonstrates ability to learn new software features or applications.

5%           Able, with direction, utilize research software to assist with department research projects.

Secondary Duties:

10%        Responsible for performance and documentation of accounting policies and procedures for assigned area(s). Assists internal and external auditors by providing appropriate documentation and support when requested.

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree (Accounting or Finance) from an accredited institution required.
  • CPA or advanced degree preferred.   
  • 1 - 3 years of related experience in the accounting field in industry or equivalent in public accounting preferred.
  • Advanced skills in Excel & Word and functional knowledge of Outlook required.
  • Experience with database General Ledger software preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organization, communication and interpersonal skills required.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 10 lbs.

The work environment is a quiet, professional office.  Additionally, the department must adhere to strict deadlines.  As a result, overtime is required during certain critical times.  And, flexibility is important, as the need to work overtime is not always anticipated in advance. This position would be also be expected to primarily work in the Birmingham office during peak financial reporting close deadlines.

Position Salary Range

$53,779.00 - $88,744.00

The salary range displayed represents the entirety of the pay grade for this position. Most candidates will start in the bottom half of the range. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have, your location and comparison to other team members already in this role.
