Job Description

The Carlisle Group has been retained to find a Director of Underwriting. Our client is an A.M. Best A rated Mutual Insurance Company that does $100M in written premium. They are in the greater Harrisburg, PA area. Relocation assistance will be provided.


BASIC PURPOSE:


Provide leadership for underwriting staff for assigned distribution and/or market segments to achieve desired corporate underwriting profitability and growth objectives. Provide guidance with respect to risk selection and pricing. Effectively manage business processes related to all transactions throughout the policy lifecycle. Build effective relationships with distribution and/or market segments contributing to profitability and growth. Hire, develop, train, and motivate underwriting staff. Work with leadership to develop profitability and growth objectives, including associated budget projections during the planning process.



Job Requirements:

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage and provide leadership to underwriting staff and guidance in matters of risk selection and pricing to select and to retain profitable business aligned with division and company objective.
  • Manage, update, and communicate underwriting business processes around quote/proposal, policy insurance, and policy administration.
  • Provide input related to products and pricing for assigned distribution and/or market segments.
  • Actively participate with Distribution/Marketing to build effective relationships with Brokers.
  • Supervisory responsibilities to include staffing, training and development, performance management, and work force planning.
  • Collaborate with leadership to establish department goals and objectives and participate in planning and budgeting of resources.
  • Manage underwriting book of business within acceptable corporate risk appetite or tolerances within various geographies. Place reinsurance as appropriate for various lines of business and geographies in accordance with corporate risk appetite and tolerance statements.
  • Develop technical knowledge and underwriting expertise appropriate for assigned distribution and market segments. Provide input and direction into company underwriting philosophy and related guidelines and business processes.
  • Participate/lead assigned underwriting and system projects.
  • Travel to visit brokers and insureds as necessary to assist in new or renewal presentations or foster business relationships. Participate in industry conferences on behalf of the company and parent organization.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree, or comparable industry experience may be considered with a high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • CPCU, ASLI, ARM, or equivalent designations preferred or evidence of continuing and progressive education in the insurance industry.
  • 10+ years of underwriting experience with proven record on in-depth knowledge of underwriting business.
  • 5+ years of large account (75k+ annual written premium) experience required.
  • 5+ years of management experience with a proven record of favorable accomplishments.
  • Ability to travel up to 15% to attend trade shows and meet with agents and brokers.
  • Solid technical knowledge of commercial insurance forms, rates, and rules.
  • Understanding of the state and federal regulatory environment.
  • Ability to foster and maintain excellent relationships with brokers, agents, and direct representatives.
  • Proven ability to creatively price large accounts.
  • Knowledge of the underwriting function, insurance coverages, and rate making.
  • Proven ability to identify and analyze exposures, recognize areas of concern, and develop appropriate solutions.
  • Strong judgment, decision-making, organizational, and negotiation skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Coaching skills to assist others to grow and attain their personal goals.
