Senior Underwriter, Pollution Liability

Position Overview

The Underwriter will be responsible for all aspects of portfolio management, including solicitation of submissions, underwriting analysis, preparing and issuing indications/quotations/binders, and marketing.  The group works on a national basis underwriting pollution liability submissions primarily from retail environmental brokers.  The Underwriter will report to the National Product Line manager and will work collaboratively with the Site Pollution team on a national basis.

Essential Job Functions

This position has clear and distinct accountability for business results for an assigned book of business and: 

  • Focuses on new business production, renewal and account management
  • Manages components of development, growth and profitability for book of business and drives accountability for underwriting production goals
  • Underwriting of site pollution liability, contractor pollution liability, and professional liability.  The primary focus of the book is Complex Site Pollution Liability and proficiency with that line of business is essential.
  • Evaluate and underwrite pollution liability account risks including the review of Phase I and Phase II site assessments, engineering reports, operations performed by the insured and legal and regulatory risks.
  • Producer development and management
  • Travels to key markets/accounts and remains highly visible in the marketplace
  • Cross marketing with other Starr products
  • Manage tracking of book of business including: pipeline tracking, forecasting, budgeting, rate change, and losses in the portfolio.
  • Provide data to actuarial, claims, finance and product line managers as requested
  • Help develop and revise product offerings, enhancements, marketing materials, and underwriting templates

Requirements

  • 4 year degree in engineering/science or a significant background in environmental issues is preferred.
  • 5 years plus in underwriting, preferably with some Environmental experience
  • Strong understanding and familiarity with environmental investigations and environmental regulations
  • Strong writing skills and understanding of insurance contract terms and conditions
  • Proven track record in managing an insurance portfolio
  • Developed relationships with environmental brokers
