Head of Corporate Underwriting

Job Description

Duties & Functions

Underwriting Strategy & Execution

  • Review Underwriting Guidelines and rules of various divisions, drawing on historical underwriting expertise to suggest changes and implement.
  • Define and refine underwriting appetite, ensuring risk selection aligns with financial objectives and market opportunities.
  • Partner with distribution teams to develop underwriting solutions tailored to distribution channel(s) needs
  • Ensure underwriting consistency across regional and national underwriting teams.
  • Supports the CUO in any underwriting referral(s) escalated

Portfolio Management & Risk Governance

  • Set underwriting authority levels (Letters of Authority) and ensure adherence to corporate risk tolerances and compliance standards.
  • Lead team responsible for Auditing against those guidelines.

Product Development & Market Innovation

  • Enhance underwriting efficiency through automation, data analytics, and AI-driven risk assessment tools.
  • Lead underwriting innovation initiatives, leveraging technology to streamline risk assessment and decision-making.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and training to underwriting teams across property and casualty disciplines.
  • Foster a high-performance underwriting culture that emphasizes accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • This position has oversight of Corporate Underwriting staff

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 15+ years of commercial P&C insurance industry business experience either in an Underwriting or a Product capacity or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of multiple commercial products
  • Prior Underwriting or Product experience with, General Liability, Property/Inland Marine, Professional
  • E&S experience preferred but not required
  • In-depth knowledge of multiple P&C products with a specific focus on General Liability, Property (including Inland Marine), Umbrella/Excess Casualty, Professional.
  • Experience successfully communicating with, selling to, and obtaining the support of internal and external senior leadership; excellent verbal, written and presentation skills
  • Strong knowledge and experience in a variety of state regulatory environment changes impacting company products
  • Ability to act independently and make sound decisions based on company, product, and regulatory knowledge
  • Proven personal leadership skills with an ability to collaborate and maintain relationships throughout the organization
  • Problem solving ability and the ability to adapt to shifting priorities and align activities and priorities to meet goals
  • Proven ability to think strategically and innovatively
  • Ability to manage multiple projects; keeping projects on track and advising management when not
  • Industry designations such as AU, CPCU, CIC, etc are a plus
