Zurich is seeking a Market Facing Umbrella & Excess Underwriter for our National Accounts team in our New York office.
This role will be filled at either the Underwriter Mid Senior or Senior Level The hiring manager will determine the appropriate level based upon the selected applicant’s experience and skill set relative to the qualifications listed for this position.
As a Market Facing Umbrella & Excess Underwriter you will have a chance to use your marketing and analytical skills. Specifically, you will analyze and underwrite new and renewal business, under general direction, utilizing The Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework within delegated authority levels on assignments of higher technical complexity ensuring a high level of service to customers. This is a market facing position thus we are seeking someone with a strong sales execution mindset and advanced knowledge of large umbrella and excess policies.
Some of the key accountabilities of this role include:
Underwrite and analyze new and renewal business utilizing The Zurich Way of Underwriting framework and within delegated authority levels on assignment of higher technical complexity and coordination.
Administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines, insurance laws and regulations, and rating annual rules.
Develop, maintain & collaborate with Line of Business representatives on referrals and other business related needs, as appropriate.
May provide guidance to lower level associates.
Develop and maintain relationships with distributors (agents & brokers) in support of business retention and acquisition and works with customers and distributors (agents & brokers) to determine their insurance related needs and provide solutions.
Supports the sales culture by being a Help Point for agents, brokers and customers.
Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities.
Complete detailed opportunity assessment with key distributors to identify growth opportunities
Qualify accounts to meet with the organization's appetite, balanced with sound business opportunity.
Make broker/customer and on-sight calls with a planned and well-prepared purpose
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area OR
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area OR
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area OR
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 8 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area
Preferred Qualifications for both levels:
Technical knowledge of Excess Casualty Underwriting
Established broker relationships (retail brokers)
Sales execution mindset
Creative problem-solving skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills

The salary range for this role at the Market Facing Underwriter II level is $98,800-$123,500. The salary range for this role at the Market Facing Underwriter III level is $126,100-$157,600. This is the range Zurich NA in good faith believes is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of the posting. Zurich NA may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and this range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in New York City, NY. This range may be modified in the future. This job is also bonus eligible. No amount is considered to be wages or compensation until such amount is earned, vested, and determinable.
