Our Finance team is currently seeking an Accounting Operations Supervisor in our Worcester, MA location. Position is eligible for a Hybrid/Flex work arrangement. This is a full-time, exempt role.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
We are seeking an experienced accounting professional to lead a team responsible for key operational accounting activities supporting premium, loss, commission, cash, receivable, and collection processes.
As Supervisor, Accounting Operations, you will support and oversee the accurate and timely completion of certain accounting activities, including account reconciliations, journal entries, financial analysis, applicable Sarbanes-Oxley controls, legal collection trends, and certain applicable tax reporting activities. You will provide accounting expertise, maintain a strong control environment, and partner across the organization to resolve issues and improve financial processes.
This is an opportunity to combine technical accounting knowledge with people leadership, analytical thinking, and process improvement. You will have meaningful responsibility for accounting quality and operational effectiveness.
IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:
Lead Accounting Operations
- Lead the day-to-day execution of assigned premium, loss, commission, cash, receivable, collection, and related accounting processes.
- Collaborate with management on team priorities, work assignment and alignment, monitor progress, and ensure deliverables are completed accurately and on time.
- Review and approve account reconciliations, journal entries, financial analyses, control documentation, and other accounting deliverables.
- Oversee the investigation and resolution of accounting discrepancies, aged reconciling items, interface issues, and operational exceptions.
- Ensure accounting activity is recorded and supported in accordance with applicable accounting policies, control requirements, and established procedures.
- Analyze overdue premium, financial receivables, legal collections, and other relevant trends.
- Identify emerging issues and communicate meaningful insights and recommendations to management and business partners.
Maintain a Strong Control Environment
- Oversee the performance, review, and documentation of applicable Sarbanes-Oxley controls.
- Support consistent compliance with accounting policies, control standards, and departmental procedures.
- Ensure accounting procedures, process documentation, reconciliations, and supporting records remain accurate and current.
- Support internal and external audits, regulatory examinations, and other compliance-related requests, as needed.
- Partner with auditors, control owners, and business stakeholders to respond to inquiries and provide requested documentation, as needed by management.
Develop and Engage Employees
- Support, coach, and develop junior accounting professionals.
- Establish clear performance expectations and provide timely, constructive feedback, as needed.
- Hold team members accountable for quality, accuracy, timeliness, and successful execution of their responsibilities.
- Provide input into performance evaluations, compensation recommendations, development plans, and other talent decisions, as applicable.
- Support management insight into workload and team capacity, allocate resources, and adjust priorities to meet changing business needs.
- Develop team member capabilities through coaching, training, knowledge sharing, cross-training, and stretch assignments.
- Foster a collaborative and inclusive environment that encourages accountability, continuous learning, and professional growth.
Improve Processes and Leverage Technology
- Evaluate existing accounting processes and identify opportunities to improve accuracy, efficiency, control effectiveness, and scalability.
- Lead or support process standardization, automation, and workflow-improvement initiatives.
- Use financial data and operational metrics to identify trends, recurring issues, root causes, and improvement opportunities.
- Support and lead, where applicable, the evaluation, testing, and implementation of financial system and process changes.
- Maintain effective procedures and documentation for assigned accounting processes.
- Develop and monitor performance measures related to timeliness, quality, productivity, outstanding items, and control effectiveness.
Partner Across the Organization
- Serve as a subject matter expert and primary point of contact for assigned accounting processes.
- Partner with Finance, Operations, Technology, Treasury, Claims, Billing, and other teams, as applicable, to resolve issues and implement sustainable solutions.
- Communicate accounting results, trends, risks, control matters, and operational concerns clearly to management and business partners.
- Build support for accounting, process, and control recommendations while maintaining productive working relationships.
- Exercise sound judgment in setting priorities, resolving issues, managing delivery commitments, and escalating significant matters.
- Participate in cross-functional projects and initiatives affecting assigned accounting processes.
WHAT YOU NEED TO APPLY:
Required Skills, Experience & Qualifications
- 5+ years of progressive accounting, finance, or related professional experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent relevant work experience.
- Strong understanding of Property & Casualty insurance (Personal and Commercial Lines).
- Experience preparing or reviewing account reconciliations, journal entries, financial analyses, and/or accounting controls.
- Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP accounting principles and internal-control practices.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze financial information, identify issues, and develop practical solutions.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities and deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft 365 applications, including Power BI.
Preferred Qualifications
- 2+ years of supervisory, team leadership, project leadership, or comparable experience.
- Experience with premium, loss, commission, cash, receivable, collection, or other operational accounting processes.
- Experience with Sarbanes-Oxley controls and supports internal or external audits.
- Experience using general ledger, reconciliation, financial reporting, workflow, or enterprise resource planning systems.
- Experience with data analytics, business-intelligence, visualization, or automation tools.
- Familiarity with legacy/mainframe systems.
- CPA, CMA, MBA, or another relevant professional designation.
