Director, Product

Job Description

Established in 2021, Independence Pet Holdings is a corporate holding company that manages a diverse and broad portfolio of modern pet health brands and services, including insurance, pet education, lost recovery services, and more throughout North America.

We believe pet insurance is more than a financial product and build solutions to simplify the pet parenting journey and help improve the well-being of pets. As a leading authority in the pet category, we operate with a full stack of resources, capital, and services to support pet parents. Our multi-brand and omni-channel approach include our own insurance carrier, insurance brands and partner brands.

Position Summary:

The Director, Product is a high-impact leadership role responsible for the performance, compliance, and strategic evolution of our multi-brand insurance portfolio. Operating at the intersection of Portfolio Analytics, State Regulation, and Brand Strategy, you will ensure our products—distributed through DTC, B2B, and B2B2C channels—are optimized for both profitability and market competitiveness.

You will oversee the "product chassis" for iconic brands like ASPCA and SPOT, leveraging deep data insights to drive state-level filings, rate adequacy, and brand-specific feature enhancements. This role is not just about filing products; it’s about managing the living health of a complex insurance ecosystem.

ASPCA + SPOT are the majority contributors to DPIP's P&L.

Job Location: Hybrid in Chicago, IL

Key Responsibilities:

1. Data-Driven Portfolio Analytics

  • Performance Monitoring: Architect and lead the "Portfolio Health" function, utilizing advanced analytics to monitor Loss Ratios, Retention, and New Business Trends at the brand, state, and cohort levels.
  • Opportunity Identification: Use data to identify "pockets of opportunity"—states or brands where product tweaks, rate adjustments, or coverage changes can drive outsized growth or correct adverse loss trends.
  • Segmentation Strategy: Analyze the differing risk profiles and consumer behaviors of our various distribution channels to ensure product-market fit.

2. Multi-Brand & Channel Optimization

  • Brand Customization: Manage the delicate balance between a standardized operational core and the unique requirements of brand partners (e.g., AKC’s breeder focus vs. ASPCA’s welfare focus).
  • Distribution Alignment: Optimize products for the specific friction points and conversion drivers of DTC, B2B, and B2B2C (partnership) channels.

3. Cross-Functional Leadership & Partnership

  • Actuarial & Pricing: Partner closely with Actuaries to translate technical pricing indications into filed rate structures that align with brand goals.
  • Marketing & Growth: Collaborate with Growth teams to ensure product features align with acquisition strategies and that "Product Truth" is accurately represented in marketing.
  • Operations & Tech: Work with IT and Claims leadership to ensure that state-specific rules and brand nuances are seamlessly implemented in the policy administration system.
