Work Environment: The location of this position is flexible and open to virtual and/or remote based applicants. Occasional travel to agencies, program partners, and industry conferences to maintain relationships and market intel.

What you can Expect: Owns and grows a portfolio of insurance programs (specialized products distributed through program managers/agencies). This person is the business owner for those programs—driving sales, underwriting quality, profitability, and the rollout of new programs—by partnering across underwriting, claims, actuary, compliance, finance, legal, and marketing.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience: Commercial lines underwriting, program management, or insurance territory management/sales (5 or more years); agency/program manager relations; launching or managing delegated authority/programs a plus. 

  • Skills: Relationship building + consultative selling; data‑driven decisioning; strong business acumen; cross‑functional leadership; excellent communication. 

  • Mindset: Owner mentality, proactive, comfortable with travel and external‑facing work, disciplined underwriting and compliance.

Job Description Summary

By joining the National Retail Programs team, you will work with select agency partners who have a connection to program business opportunities. As a Consultant you will hone your technical skill, analytical skills, and creative problem solving with program portfolios that will give you the thrill of being challenged to establish opportunities and foster profit and growth. You will establish relationships, built on mutual respect, which will be the foundation of your drive for success. This drive, paired with your industry knowledge, will help you identify dials to turn allowing for the right balance of business and program outcomes.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Drives the sales and underwriting relationship for Programs products and services. Responsible for establishment of program goals and metrics for specific programs ensuring alignment with scorecards. Reviews trends and profitability; takes action based on results as needed.

  • Responsible for generating and establishing new program relationships, which includes travel to agencies, key program partners, and attending program tradeshows on behalf of Nationwide. Responsible for facilitating all steps involved in the due diligence process and makes recommendations to senior management on new opportunities. Responsible for the implementation of all new programs from development of guidelines, form/rate filings, compliance, finance, claims, legal, actuarial, and marketing materials to ensure proper program integration.

  • Directs the program relationships/results internally with program underwriters and processors.  Understands business and program needs allowing for proactive management of policy structure, handling and strategy.

  • Interacts with various cross-functional business partners (i.e. claims, actuary, compliance, etc.) to achieve company goals and objectives. Communicates and creates programs initiatives and performance goals.

  • Consults with program agents and internal partners to develop business solutions. Shares understanding of organizational capabilities and opportunities to drive maximum value of relationships. Communicates appetite, acceptability, terms, conditions, pricing and sales techniques of program portfolios. Provides industry trend observations to leadership. Consults with agencies regarding risk management and coverage options and to improve retention and profitability.  Utilizes data and reporting support to decisioning.

  • Communicates with agencies to establish the company as the provider of choice for the territory for all enterprise products with an emphasis on commercial lines. Communicates product, technology changes and company objectives. Communicates market intelligence to agencies and leadership

  • Independently establishes and maintains effective relationships with brokers and program managers in order to generate growth and profitably. Travels to existing and potential program manager offices.

  • Attends industry functions to develop expertise.

  • Acts as a resource for direction, training and guidance for less experienced staff. May be responsible for underwriting and support staff.

  • Leads delivery of appropriate customer service levels. Follows up and ensures proper handling of customer service requests.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned. 

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Director/AVP. May have direct reports.

Typical Skills and Experiences: 

Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is preferred.

Licenses/Certifications/Designations: Relevant professional designation such as CPCU or CIC is preferred.

Experience: Eight years of progressively more responsible underwriting and sales experience in commercial lines of business preferred. Understanding of markets consistent with our underwriting appetite and product portfolio preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Advanced knowledge of underwriting policies, practices, procedures, and marketing principles across assigned lines of business. Effective verbal and written communication skills to engage with internal and external business partners. Demonstrated ability to influence and collaborate across teams and functions. Solid program leadership capabilities with the ability to manage mid-sized initiatives and contribute to larger strategic efforts. Ability to analyze and interpret underwriting data, including rating plans, policy language, and risk characteristics, to support decision-making. Proficient in project and process management, with the ability to identify and implement improvements.

Capable of evaluating program challenges and recommending practical solutions aligned with business goals. Supports internal and external partners with sound judgment and ethical decision-making. Ability to coach and guide team members and contribute to setting team priorities. Comfortable using and learning job-related software and tools.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Travel up to 25% typical for this role to visit clients or attend meetings. Extended or non-standard work hours as required to meet business need.

The expected starting salary range for Consultant, National Retail Programs - Commercial Lines : $108,000.00 - $162,000.00
