Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies, Workers Compensation Division, has an immediate need for a Small Business Underwriter to join it's Northern California team! The Small Business Underwriter is responsible for successfully completing the Underwriting Training Program, evaluating new and renewal business in accordance with established guidelines, and aiding more experienced underwriting personnel in developing and maintaining agency relationships.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
SUBMISSION MANAGEMENT AND SUPPORT
- Coordinates with the underwriting support team to bind agreed upon policies.
AGENCY COMMUNICATION AND SERVICE COORDINATION
- Communicates effectively with external clientele and internal resource partners telephonically, via electronic correspondence and if appropriate, in the field. Contributes to productive agency relationships and client retention. Ensures deadlines are met and prompt responses are provided.
- Occasionally accompanies other Underwriters and Marketing Managers to local agency visits, and if appropriate, overnight to more distant locations, aimed at learning and promoting improved agency relationships.
WORKFLOW OPTIMIZATION AND TEAM COLLABORATION
- Performs special assignments and projects as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Risk Management, Business, Economics, or related discipline, required.
- Experience: A minimum of 2 years of experience in an underwriting support role (e.g., Underwriting Technician role) or Small Business Underwriting, preferably within the workers’ compensation industry, highly preferred.
- Computer Skills: Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite and able to become adept with proprietary and vended software applications.
- Language Ability: Able to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations. Able to write detailed reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Able to effectively present information to management and public groups.
- Reasoning Ability: Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Able to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Math Ability: Able to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Able to apply concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
