Job Overview
The Site Pollution Underwriter is responsible for risk assessment and underwriting site pollution. This underwriting role combines advanced technical knowledge of environmental exposures, regulatory frameworks, and pollution insurance with strong teamwork and strategic planning skills. The position acts as the central point of expertise in evaluating, underwriting, and managing complex site pollution risks and maintaining a personal portfolio of accounts.
Key Responsibilities
Underwriting & Risk Assessment:
Oversee the assessment and underwriting of site-specific pollution risks for commercial and industrial clients.
Evaluate submissions, environmental reports, site histories, and regulatory compliance.
Maintain underwriting guidelines and best practices for site pollution risks.
Personally maintain and grow an assigned book of site pollution accounts, ensuring profitable portfolio management.
Broker Relationships:
Build and sustain strong relationships with key brokers.
Promote the company's environmental insurance capabilities to brokers and market partners.
Collaboration:
Work closely with the Environmental Casualty underwriting team to evaluate more complex pollution exposures and structure comprehensive coverage solutions.
Coordinate with other property & casualty (P&C) segments on cross-selling opportunities and integrated account strategies.
Portfolio Management:
Manage and monitor the site pollution insurance portfolio to ensure profitability and compliance.
Analyze trends, claims, and loss histories, and recommend corrective actions or product changes.
Compliance & Regulatory Awareness:
Remain up-to-date on developments in environmental laws, standards, and insurance market practices.
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Engineering, Risk Management, Insurance, or a related field.
Minimum 3 -5 years’ experience in environmental insurance, with a focus on site pollution liability underwriting.
Demonstrated leadership experience, preferably in an underwriting or environmental consulting role.
Strong working knowledge of environmental regulations, pollution liability insurance products, and risk evaluation methodologies.
Robust broker relationship management skills and experience collaborating with cross-functional insurance teams.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Superior communication and negotiation abilities.
Proficiency in relevant software (e.g., risk modeling tools, MS Office Suite).
Preferred Attributes
Professional certifications (e.g., ARM, CPCU, CIH, CHMM, or similar).
Experience handling large, complex accounts and claims.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
For individuals assigned and/or hired to work in New York, Starr Insurance Companies is required by law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets: experience and training: licensure and certifications: and other business and organizational needs. A reasonable estimate of salary would be up to $170,000.
