Underwriter, Property

Job Description

Join Starr, a global leader in commercial insurance with over a century of expertise. We empower our employees to innovate, make impactful decisions, and build lasting client relationships worldwide. At Starr, you'll work in an entrepreneurial culture alongside accessible leaders, leveraging our financial strength and vast industry experience to deliver solutions for our clients, no matter how complex. Grow your career with a rapidly growing company that invests in its people and their ability to drive real progress.

Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Special Risks Underwriter to join our growing team. In this dynamic role, you will evaluate and underwrite a broad spectrum of special risks—covering atypical, complex, or emerging exposures—across property, casualty, or other specialty lines. This opportunity is ideal for professionals with 2–5 years of relevant underwriting experience who are eager to develop deep expertise in managing unconventional risk profiles within a truly global, fast-paced insurance environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review, evaluate, and underwrite submissions involving special and hard-to-place risks, often with unique or non-standard characteristics.
  • Analyze client exposures, assess risk quality, and determine appropriate terms, pricing, and coverage for specialized accounts.
  • Engage closely with brokers, agents, and clients to develop innovative program structures and long-term partnerships for non-traditional risks.
  • Structure and negotiate complex special risk accounts, manuscript endorsements, and renewals tailored to individual client needs.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, ensuring alignment with Starr’s special risks appetite and profitability targets.
  • Collaborate with claims, risk control, legal, and other internal stakeholders to develop holistic risk solutions and responsive service.
  • Maintain meticulous documentation and data integrity within underwriting systems.
  • Stay current with emerging trends, evolving regulations, and developments in specialist and hard-to-place risk markets.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • 2–5 years of underwriting experience in specialty, surplus lines, or commercial insurance (carrier or MGA), preferably with exposure to special or complex risks.
  • Strong understanding of risk assessment, policy wording, specialty rating, and relevant lines guidelines.
  • Exceptional analytical, organizational, and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven aptitude for building effective relationships with distribution and internal partners.
  • Proficiency with underwriting platforms and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Professional designations such as CPCU, AU, or ARM are a plus.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
  • Significant opportunities for ongoing professional growth in the specialty insurance space.
  • An inclusive, collaborative, and innovative work environment where entrepreneurial thinking is rewarded.
