Position Overview:
As an Inland Marine Underwriter at Starr Insurance Companies, you will be responsible for underwriting and servicing a portfolio of inland marine business, including builder’s risk, contractor’s equipment, motor truck cargo, and various specialized property coverage. You will drive profitable growth by developing new business opportunities, analyzing and selecting risks, and nurturing relationships with agents, brokers, and clients in the Chicago market.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Underwrite, rate, and quote new and renewal inland marine business in accordance with Starr’s risk appetite and guidelines.
  • Analyze exposures, financials, and loss history to evaluate risk and determine appropriate coverage and pricing.
  • Build and maintain strong agent/broker relationships to drive new business and renewal retention.
  • Collaborate with actuarial, claims, and loss control teams to deliver comprehensive insurance solutions.
  • Negotiate terms, conditions, and pricing with producers, seeking a balance of growth and profitability.
  • Stay updated on inland marine market trends, competitor offerings, and regulatory changes.
  • Conduct field visits as needed to assess exposures and develop market intelligence.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and accurate documentation for all accounts

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 3+ years of inland marine or commercial property underwriting experience, preferably with an insurance carrier.
  • Strong knowledge of inland marine coverages, exposures, and rating methodologies.
  • Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to build agent/broker relationships and drive profitable growth.
  • CPCU, AU, ARM, or other related insurance designations are a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and underwriting/rating systems.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
