Apprentice Underwriter

Job Description

Position Summary

The Apprentice Underwriter will support underwriters to make appropriate underwriting decisions.  This position will help evaluate assigned customer exposures and risk factors in order to make sound decisions on risk selection, coverage and pricing.  Additionally, the Apprentice Underwriter position is part of a training platform to build foundational underwriting skills.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Risk evaluation.  Assist underwriters in reviewing risk by preparing submissions for review, ensuring accurate data entry into all systems and models, reviewing loss history and provide analysis on it.  Under the guidance of Actuaries, facilitate a complete review for pricing.  Produce evaluations and recommendations for underwriters.

  • Guideline adherence.  Understand and follow the applicable underwriting guidelines, policies, and procedures to maintain consistency and adherence to industry regulations.

  • Data Analysis.   Utilize analytical tools to evaluate risk exposure and understand the driver of claims.

  • Collaboration.   Support underwriters in driving a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding insureds’ risks.  Collaborate with experienced underwriters and other team members to gain a comprehensive understanding of the exposure and best means to provide coverage.

  • Documentation. Maintain accurate and detailed records of underwriting decisions and communication with both internal and external parties.  Responsible for documenting the underwriting process and decisions of assigned policies.

  • Marketing.  Assist underwriters in stewardship meetings, marketing calls and other activities.

Education, Experience, Competencies & Values

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university preferred; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Medical professional liability underwriting experience required.

  • Willingness to complete requirements of the CPCU or RPLU designation is preferred.

  • Strong analytical skills

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, governmental regulations, underwriting guidelines and manuals, bylaws, financials, articles of organization, loss runs, Joint Commission reports and other industry reports.

  • Ability to write reports and business correspondence.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of programs.

  • Comfortable and effective in presenting information and responding to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 10% of the year.

Base salary range is $63,650 - $86,105. Individual compensation packages are based on a variety of factors that are unique to each candidate including location, skill set, experience, qualifications and education.
